Q: Is Phenoelit a bunch of white hats or Black hats?
A: Yes, but the real question is, "Can one hear frogs farting under water?"...

The first question one must pose when considering such a complicated reply is, "What is a White Hat" and, "What is a Black Hat"
According to the online "What is" definition,
"...white hat describes a hacker (or, if you prefer, a cracker) who identifies a security weakness in a computer system or network but, instead of taking malicious advantage of it, exposes the weakness in a way that will allow the system's owners to fix the breach before it is can be taken advantage by others (such as black hat hackers.) Methods of telling the owners about it range from a simple phone call through sending an e-mail note to a Webmaster or administrator all the way to leaving an electronic "calling card" in the system that makes it obvious that security has been breached.
While white hat hacking is a hobby for some, others provide their services for a fee. Thus, a white hat hacker may work as a consultant or be a permanent employee on a company's payroll. A good many white hat hackers are former black hat hackers."

As far as Black hats go, "...The black hat hacker takes advantage of the break-in, perhaps destroying files or stealing data for some future purpose. The black hat hacker may also make the exploit known to other hackers and/or the public without notifying the victim. This gives others the opportunity to exploit the vulnerability before the organization is able to secure it."

That all said, the question remains, "Where does Phenoelit fit in?"
If you look carefully, you will see that Phenoelit:

• Some times will identify security weaknesses in computer systems and networks but most work is concerned with new concepts or implementations of strange ideas.
• Is composed of people that are on some company's payroll. These companies generally support or do not obstruct our activities but are in no other way related to Phenoelit. Things published by Phenoelit never represent the opinions of any company.
• Expose weaknesses in a way that allows the system owners to fix the breaches before others can take them advantage of them. As far as the method of letting people know, Rain Forest Puppy has done much work for the community at large. rfpolicy (2.0) is the de-facto standard.
• Has at times, held back announcements of weaknesses it has identified in products for other reasons. This practice is reviewed from time to time as Phenoelit is aware of the fact that full disclosure vs. non disclosure is still not decided in the community and will be a lively discussion point for some time.
• Releases some tools, which are rather single-minded in their purpose. A proof of concept in respect to a vulnerable product, protocol, etc. is just that. A Proof of Concept. It does not necessarily have to be a "nice" product. In all cases, vendors receive notification. The purpose is to encourage vendors to develop products with security in mind from the beginning (not as an add on later) and to repair software/hardware that they know to pose a security risk to customers.

I read this far and I still cannot figure out if you are White or Black!
Think of Phenoelit as a bunch of White Hats with Grey tendencies and some times very black techniques... Just do not make the mistake of aligning Phenoelit in your head as Black or White. There are very few things in this world as simple as Black and White, One or Two, Right or Wrong.

And to answer the last question:
Yes, if you have a parabolic microphone you can hear frogs farting under water as the bubbles break the surface (but you would have to be pretty sick to verify this) Of course, this answer begs the question, " ...but don't frogs have watertight asses?" Phenoelit will save this one for another time though :-)
